Dietary Advice For Specific Liver Conditions

This section gives advice on diet for people with particular liver problems. We only have space here to cover some of the information that is available. If you have already been advised to follow a special diet it is essential to talk to your doctor or dietitian before making any changes

    Liver Health?

    Alcohol and your Liver
Drinking more than the recommended limits of alcohol can lead to serious health problems. Most people think that alcohol is fairly harmless and just something to be enjoyed. Other than a few ill-effects; a hangover the next day or putting on a little bit of weight, many people do not know about the unseen damage alcohol can cause to your body

    Liver Transplantation

    What is liver Transplantation?
A liver transplant is an operation where your diseased liver is removed and replaced with a healthy donor human liver. Although liver transplants are now quite common, the operation is not undertaken lightly. It is a major operation and the body will always see the ‘new’ liver as a foreign agent and will try to destroy it. This means that if you have a liver transplant you will have to take medication for the rest of your life to stop your body rejecting the donor liver.
Success rates and leading a normal life after liver transplant is continuing to improve with each passing years, due to advancement in the technology, pre-transplant counselling and excellent post-transplant care.

    What is Hepatitis B?

    What is Hepatitis B?
Is a form of liver inflammation caused by hepatitis B virus, which is carried in the blood and body fluids which infects and damages the liver. It is the most widespread form of hepatitis worldwide.

    What is Hepatitis C

    What is Hepatitis C?
Hepatitis C, sometimes called hep C or HCV, is a virus that is carried in the blood which infects and damages the liver. This virus can cause liver inflammation (swelling) and fibrosis (scarring). In people with chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection, inflammation and fibrosis continue to spread. Over time, usually many years, this can lead to cirrhosis(last stage of liver damage)

    What is ERCP?

    What is ERCP
ERCP is a procedure that allows the doctor to take detailed x-rays of the bile duct and pancreas. This procedure is performed using a flexible tube (endoscope) which is slightly thinner than your middle finger. The scope is passed through your mouth and advanced into your stomach and duodenum, allowing the doctor to carry out treatment.

    What is a capsule endoscopy?

This procedure involves ingesting a small capsule (the size of a large vitamin pill) which will pass naturally through your digestive system while taking pictures of the intestine. The Capsule is disposable and will normally be excreted naturally in your bowel movement. The images taken are transmitted to a walkman-like Data Recorder, which saves all the images. The Data Recorder is attached to a special belt worn around your waist. After 8 hours, you will remove the belt and return it to your physician for processing.

    Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a minimally invasive procedure to assess digestive (gastrointestinal) and lung diseases. It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of the lining and walls of your digestive tract and chest, nearby organs such as the pancreas and liver, and lymph nodes.

Should I worry about fatty liver?

Fatty liver is one of the major liver health hazards in the world, due mainly to the sedentary lifestyle and junk calories. It does not cause liver failure immediately. However if ignored can cause liver damage in due course. Hence it’s importence is more of preventing future liver fibrosis and cirrhosis with medicine and diet.
